WHY DOUBLE-LOOP?

"If you do what you always do you'll get what you always get" is a very simple idea, which isn't easy to act on. How do we recognise our patterns of behaviour, assumptions, guiding lights and then work out which ones are helpful and which ones aren't? How do we identify our routines and bad habits and how do we then break out of them?

Many organisations and people are stuck in first gear and see change as process of hitting the accelerator to speed up or the brakes to slow down.  They don't realise that there might be another solution out there.

Single Loop learning is all about correcting errors without questioning underlying assumptions. Double-loop learning detects errors, questions underlying assumptions behind the actions and behavior and also learns from these mistakes.

We fundamentally believe that change is about learning from our experience and that is why it is at the heart of what we do.

The idea behind Double Loop Learning came from Chris Argyris in an article for HBR called "Teaching Smart People How To Learn." (1991) .
